We clean every room top to bottom

A whole-home cleaning covers every room in the house, from the kitchen to the spare bedroom nobody uses. We start at the top of each room and work down, because dust falls. Ceiling fans and the tops of door frames get done first, then shelves and furniture. Floors come last, so nothing we knock loose lands on a floor that is already clean. Skip that order and you get a gray film on a floor that was just mopped.

Inside each room the rule is dry work before wet work. We dust and vacuum first, then wipe and mop. If you wipe a counter before the dust above it comes down, you end up wiping it again. The kitchen and the bathrooms take the most time, since grease and soap scum do not come off with one pass. The cleaner goes on and sits long enough to loosen the film. Then it gets wiped off, and the surface is rinsed so it dries without streaks.

Before we leave, the team walks through the house one more time, room by room. That walk is where small misses get caught, like a streak on the bathroom mirror or crumbs left under the toaster. Houses around Pine Bush need extra care

The houses around Pine Bush are not all built the same way. Some are old farmhouses with wide plank floors and deep window sills. Others are raised ranches and split-levels, where the short runs of stairs between floors collect dust and pet hair in every corner. Wide plank floors have gaps between the boards, and grit packs into them. A wet mop just pushes it deeper, so older floors get vacuumed along the seams before any water touches them.

Plenty of homes out here heat with hot water baseboard. Those metal fins along the bottom of the wall catch dust and pet hair all summer. When the heat kicks on in the fall, that dust warms up and you smell it through the whole house. Vacuuming the fins and wiping the covers is slow work, and it is easy to skip. Once it is done, the first cold night smells like a clean house, not like burnt dust.

Well water causes the other common problem. Houses outside the village often run on a private well, and hard well water leaves a white crust on faucets and shower heads. Iron in the water leaves orange rings in toilets and tubs. An all-purpose spray barely touches either one. They need a cleaner made for mineral scale and a few minutes to soak before anyone scrubs. Left alone, each layer builds on the last until a newer fixture looks old.

Each season brings different dirt inside

Winter in Orange County means road salt and sand on every boot that comes through the door. Salt dries into a white haze on hardwood and tile, and over time it dulls the finish on wood floors. Sand scratches that finish every time someone walks across it. So in the cold months the entryway and the mudroom get more attention. Salt comes up with warm water first, before the regular floor cleaner goes down, or the haze just spreads around.

Spring brings mud season, when the ground thaws and boots come in caked with it. Then comes pollen. The pine and oak trees around Pine Bush put out enough of it to coat window sills in a yellow film by the end of May. Pollen is fine and light, so a dry cloth only pushes it into the air and back onto the furniture. It has to come up with a damp cloth, starting with the sills where it collects first.

Summers in the Hudson Valley are humid, and the lowest floor of the house gets the worst of it. Finished basements and the bottom level of a raised ranch can stay damp for weeks. Dust in a damp room turns tacky and clings to shelves and baseboards. Bathrooms with a weak exhaust fan grow mildew in the shower corners and on the ceiling. Caught while it is still a few gray dots, it wipes right off. Left for a season, it stains the grout.
